GOP & gov lock in negotiations

Lawmakers have a new strategy to negotiate with the governor.  Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers says “we came up with the idea to literally lock ourselves in a room” with DFL Governor Mark Dayton.  Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch will be in the room Friday and Saturday as Dayton, Zellers and Koch sit together alone to try to resolve the state budget before a July 1 shutdown.  The Senate leader still said in their opinion “Republicans have done all the compromising.”

This comes after days of Republicans and Democrats taking tough political shots at each other.  Dayton stood with Democratic leaders earlier in the day to show “what’s at stake for Minnesota” in a shutdown.  DFLers listed special education, higher education, healthcare, property taxes, transit, seniors and public safety all being at stake as “the GOP budget protects the richest 2% at a huge cost to everyone else.”
