Math problems? Help is on the way

Third graders in the Twin Cities who are struggling with math will be the target of a University of Minnesota study funded with nearly $1 million from the National Institutes of Health.

Educational psychology professors Asha Jitendra and Jennifer McComas were awarded the grant for a two-year project to focus on students who have trouble making sense of word problems. This two-year project will test the efficacy of “schema-based instruction,” in which students learn to first categorize word problems into a few different types and then apply a plan to figure out the solution.

About 260 third graders in 40 Twin Cities classrooms will take part in the study.
