Democrats in recent weeks have raised the possibility of a statewide referendum in 2024 on abortion, saying Republicans are likely to try such a maneuver if they control the Minnesota House and Senate after the fall elections. So far, Republicans have not talked about it.
In the 5th, Omar faces well-funded challengers in Aug. 9 primary and the Democrat who wins will see a well-funded challenger in November, though the seat is considered safely Democrat. Democrat Ettinger, running in the 1st, makes big loans to his campaign in a “safe” Republican district.
The Majority Leader of the DFL-led Minnesota House of Representatives says partnership building and focusing prosecutorial resources on violent crime will steady public safety in the county.
Democrats at the Minnesota Legislature have called for voters in November to elect a “pro-choice majority” to the state Capitol. That request includes flipping the Senate and changing the makeup of the state House, where the DFL already has a narrow majority.
The longtime attorney says he is the “change agent” the county attorney’s office needs.
As the campaigns heat up, we talked to political observers about Walz’s reelection odds, and what could change between now and Election Day.

Ettinger cruised to victory in the DFL contest, while Finstad eked out a 388-vote win over state Rep. Jeremy Munson in a race that pitted a candidate backed by the Republican establishment against a prospective member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Jensen has called on Republicans to “hold the line” and keep more of Minnesota’s historic surplus for next year — when he might be governor.
There are nine GOP candidates and seven Democrats vying to advance to the Aug. 24 special election.
