Hormonal changes that occur with puberty affect young people’s circadian rhythms, the internal “clocks” that set the timing of the body’s physiological functions — including the daily sleep/wake cycle.
“There is considerable variation in working memory development during the teen years, and some teens may not be as ready to drive on their own without additional assistance,” said Daniel Romer, the study’s senior author.
The percentage of Minnesota 9th graders who report that they started drinking before age 13 has plummeted from 30 percent in 2001 to 11 percent in 2016.
“The best prevention is to immunize people,” said Dr. Jane Korn, medical director of health promotion and chronic disease at the Minnesota Department of Health.
Overall, Minnesota has done better than most other states — but the state’s racial and ethnic differences were among the highest in the country.
Teenagers killed on U.S. roads in recent years were about twice as likely to be driving an older vehicle, or to be driving cars without important safety features.
A $600,000 grant will be used to raise awareness among families and providers.
