Researchers recommend that people seek out treatments with a proven track record, such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
“The most trustworthy studies consistently showed little or no effect of long-chain omega-3 fats on depression or anxiety, and they should not be encouraged as a treatment,” said the study’s lead author, Lee Hooper.
“Music lights up the emotional area of the brain, the reward system and the pleasure pathways,” said Dr. Veena Graff, the study’s lead author.
“We’re seeing an increase in anxiety that is related to kids’ concern about the personal consequences of U.S. immigration policy, and these are U.S.-born citizens,” says Brenda Eskenazi, the study’s lead author.
“These findings suggest that being kind to oneself switches off the threat response and puts the body in a state of safety and relaxation that is important for regeneration and healing,” says researcher Hans Kirschner.
The study also found that middle-aged women who have been sexually assaulted are at greater risk of depression and anxiety.
