St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman has hired attorney J.D. Burton to be a city lobbyist.
Burton, a 2008 William Mitchell law school grad, now works as a senior attorney at the Flaherty & Hood law firm. He’s also worked in the past as a legislative assistant for Congresswoman Betty McCollum and as a financial law clerk for the City of Minneapolis.
The city was a lobbyist short after Wendy Underwood left in January to work for Target. Sarah Erickson is also on the city’s government relations staff.
Because the city was one lobbyist short of a full team during this year’s legislatie session, it hired the Messerli Kramer law firm at $5,000 a month to lobby at the Capitol for a new Saints ballpark.
We’ll find out any day now how that worked out, when Gov. Mark Dayton announces the winners of a $47 million bonding fund sweepstakes set up by the Legislature so it wouldn’t have to choose some worthy recipients over others.
