Mayor Rybak and Police Chief Harteau plan National Night Out visits

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will make a National Night Out appearance tonight with Police Chief Janeé Harteau at the North Commons Park Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The park is at 1801 James Ave. N.

The mayor and chief also plan to separately attend other National Night Out gatherings around the city.

The annual event is seen as a way to strengthen relationships between police and neighborhoods, as well as between neighbors.

The Minneapolis Police Department has faced recent incidents involving inappropriate behavior by off-duty officers. Harteau has said she plans to examine the department’s training and hiring practices in light of the incidents.

    Help the police

One comment I have heard-from officers- more than once is that the city and county attorneys do not prosecute cases the police give them, and that this happens to a frustrating degree. I find this very disturbing. It would also be great if the officers were not always in the car, and the token bike patrols were increased to real visibility. I know it’s too much to ask that officers serve the neighborhoods they live in, but that would really be best, as there is no real investment in the community they serve, and though they do the job, it’s not really the same.
