Don’t mistake medical discount plans with health insurance

Medical discount plans might seem like an affordable alternative to standard health insurance, but beware warns the Consumerist’s Chris Walters.

Some plans being sold don’t lower health care costs at all — and in some cases, can even increase them.

That’s why the Federal Trade Commission and 24 states recently filed a total of 54 lawsuits against companies selling medical discount plans to people lacking health insurance.
