According to Aaron Blake of the Washington Post, Republicans are on track to control approximately 30 governor seats after the Nov. 2 election.
Currently, Democrats hold 26 of 50 governor’s seats, while Republicans hold 23, but Democrats are privately acknowledging they are unlikely to keep their current majority.
Incumbency — normally a powerful advantage in gubernatorial elections — may provide few protections for Democrats this year. This is especially so in the Midwestern states of Ohio, Iowa and Illinois.
