The role of board members: Food for thought

If you’re on a board of directors, or thinking of joining one, check out this blog post from the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network, a MinnPost YPN member group.

Tom Basquill attached a thought-provoking comment to the post:

“Nonprofits have been given special tax-exempt status by their community (via our elected government) because they provide, in theory, a benefit to that community. Board members are actually community representatives who should be making sure the nonprofit is living up to its obligation to provide this benefit.

I wonder how many people who serve on nonprofit boards think about their role as representatives of the entire community? Would that way of thinking change the way they approached their duties as board members?”
