We were wondering when this was going to happen: When dancer Otto Ramstad would team with his twin brother, visual artist and designer Emmett Ramstad, for an evening of performance. This weekend, they take the stage at Intermedia Arts for “Symptom,” an investigation of the body as social and biological entity.

The piece is directed by Otto Ramstad and Olive Bieringa (the couple, who are The BodyCartography Project, were awarded 2010 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Choreographers), with an electro-acoustic sound score by Andrea Parkins.

The work kinetically converses with such avant-garde artists as Dan Graham and Bruce Nauman, as it incorporates artistic disciplines from sculpture and drawing, to movement and text. Using the idea of symptom loosely, as manifestation and metaphor, the two performers are less interested in movement as a means to virtuosity than as a way of researching ideas.
