WASHINGTON — Twin Cities radio listeners and television viewers were likely to have heard from Republican John Kline last week.

Kline, the most senior Republican in the Minnesota congressional delegation, conducted seven TV and radio interviews between July 19 and Sunday, appearing on Minnesota Public Radio, KTLK-FM, WCCO Radio (twice), Twin Cities Public Television, Fox 9 and WCCO-TV. The topic du jour: raising the debt ceiling and the “historic opportunity to change the way Washington spends money,” according to an update from his office.

Kline is one of the strongest supporters of House Republicans’ efforts to cut the federal deficit and cap future spending as part of a deal to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.

Seven live interviews in a week is an unusually heavy media schedule for a member of Congress in a non-election year. But, as President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner demonstrated with their back-to-back nationally televised addresses last night, both parties are putting a premium on pitching their case for a debt limit deal to the American public ahead of next week’s deadline.

  1. I would be more impressed with Rep Kline should he deign to come into his district and meet his constituents. He does not respond to letters if you are not lock-step with him. Even when running for re-election, he doesn’t appear.

  2. Kudos to Ann Richards for her comments regarding John Kline. It is beyond my comprehension why the man continues to be re-elected.

  3. Second on that. I’ve contacted Mr. Kline’s office (including in the last week) and have not gotten any type of response at all. Other than a spam type email saying “thanks for signing up for updates”…

  4. Rep. Kline’s recent “poll” was reminiscent of Stephen Colbert’s phrasing — “Do you agree with me a little? or a LOT?”
