School of Dentistry Dean Patrick Lloyd is excited about this year’s entering class of dental students. When they step into the classroom, gone are the teeth on a stick, the old way of learning to become a dentist. Their replacement is a 100-station facility with state-of-the-art mannequins connected to computers. They look and feel like real patients, and the computer can monitor the students’ performance with incredible accuracy. Testing is no longer subjective; the computers can measure and grade based on accuracy and sensitivity. Students learn 40 to 50 percent faster and graduate with skills that make them better dentists. Certainly a reason to smile.
