The leader of the state’s largest teachers’ union is urging teachers and the public to contact their school superintendents and ask them to show President Obama’s back-to-school address to students Tuesday.

The scheduled television address is drawing criticism from some conservatives who argue that the president is trying to indoctrinate students with his political beliefs.

White House officials say Obama will challenge students to work hard, set goals for their education and take responsibility for their learning.

Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher plans to make a statement about the controversy later today.

  1. The fact that Education Minnesota is for this concerns me more than the president wanting kids to view his message. Is this thing online anywhere that we can view it?

  2. Whatever the issue, if EdMN is involved in promoting it, you can bet the farm it’s not in the best interest of the students.

I have to hand it to the left. They saw the potential that public schools held for providing captive audiences for inculcation of their idealogy, they took full advantage and are just starting to reap the benefits that millions of brainwashed little drones bring.

Heck, even the “collateral damage”, the millions of kids who’ve been put out into the streets functionally illiterate have value to the left as permanent wards of the state.

  3. Sounds like some people are really threatened by the idea of a well educated population that can think for itself.

  4. Maybe they will read more, grow up, attend and pass college and work for teach for america just like Senator Michelle Bachman’s kid. Like Martha S says that a good thing.

  5. Can you imagine the response of the “why do you hate America” crowd during Bushco if GWB had decided to address school children across the nation and ANYONE dared to complain? They would have been screaming for the firing of any teacher or administrator who didn’t show the speech or who raised questions about anything the President said for demonstrating disrespect for the President of the United States.

But of course the necessity of respecting the President only counts for those folks when the President is a Reb.

The simple solution for all of you who are afraid Obama is going to Svengaliize or Rasputinize your children in a brief speech over television is to just send your progeny to school tomorrow with carefully-sized tin foil hats. That will block out those mysterious, hypnotic rays that Obama will magically be beaming out through the ether while his speech is being broadcast on TV.

And you thought the “imperious curse” was just an evil, imaginary idea from those nasty Harry Potter books.

  6. Heck, some schools had ‘channel one’ back in the day, full of slanted crap all the time and that was just fine.

  7. The retracted study guide wants the children of America (at least the one’s who are trapped in the union schools) to “help” the President.

I want to define “help” rather than the union teachers.
