Last week, Common Cause filed complaints against two groups, Minnesota’s Future and the Republican Governors Association, because, it said they dodged Minnesota’s disclosure law.
Common Cause Executive Director Mike Dean noted that Minnesota has some of the nation’s best donor disclosure laws because of a coalition of groups that passed legislation at the end of the 2010 legislative session. Because the state has such tight laws, they should be enforced, he said. The Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board meets Tuesday, and Dean hopes Common Cause’s complaints will get a quick hearing.
But Sunday’s New York Times offered a fascinating and entertaining piece about one reporter’s hunt for the backers of independent expenditure-type groups. If you didn’t see it, it’s a worthy read. Disclosure is not a given in other parts of the country.
