The Nice Ride bike rental service broke a daily record Saturday, with 5,613 rides taken on the green bikes.

The nonprofit service teamed up with the Minneapolis Foundation — which is celebrating its 100th anniversary — to promote the event. It worked. The old daily record was 4,486.

The Minneapolis Foundation donated $1 for each ride Saturday to Free Bikes 4 Kids, a local nonprofit that provides bikes for kids in need. And the foundation and Nice Ride provided free helmets and passes at some stations Saturday morning.

Sandra Vargas, President and CEO of The Minneapolis Foundation, said in a statement: “Minneapolis is famous for being a place where people will go the extra mile for a good cause — especially on bikes. We’re thrilled to cap off our first century of community building by helping the Twin Cities set this record, while simultaneously supporting a local nonprofit that is making a difference for our kids.”
