The Duluth City Council has approved construction of a new police headquarters, voting 6 to 3 to borrow $18 million to build one, writes Brandon Stahl in the Duluth News Tribune. The story says the council voted down a proposal to fund five new police officers and three new firefighters.
“Native daughter Margaret Anderson Kelliher will officially announce she’s running for governor during an event Wednesday at the family farm just west of Mankato,” writes Mark Fischenich in the Mankato Free Press. Kelliher, a Minneapolis DFL-er, is the speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
The Worthington City Council met in special session as the city’s Economic Development Authority Monday to authorize a special tax levy of $86,000 to be collected in 2010 for economic development costs, reports Laura Grevas in the Worthington Daily Globe. She adds, “The tax collected will go to the city and the city council will decide how the money will be spent, essentially contracting with WREDC for economic development initiatives in the community.”
Enrollment at Austin Public Schools is more than 100 students than expected, reports Katie Johnson in the Austin Daily Herald. In mid-August the district had estimated 4,414 students. The superintendent is considering whether to hire five new staff members, the story says.
A forum will be held Sept. 24 in Rice, Minn., in response to an increase in the number of wind development proposals to area landowners, the St. Cloud Times reports. “The interactive forum will help landowners consider their options for land leases, self development and other investments in large-scale wind turbine projects,” the story says.
