Fine particulate matter comes from a variety of sources, including motor vehicles, power plants, airplanes, residential wood burning, forest fires and dust storms.
Evidence suggests a strong connection between exposure to UV radiation during childhood and adolescence and skin cancer later in life.
The proportion of parents with children aged 2 to 12 years old who say they spank their child dropped from 50 percent in 1993 to 35 percent in 2017.
Children who lack such fitness are at increased risk of developing heart disease and stroke when they become adults.
“The message we are trying to get out there is that our offices are safe, that ill and well children are being separated,” said Dr. Sheldon Berkowitz. “We’re taking all the needed precautions: masking, gowning, wearing face shields.”

The more parents try to impose strict control over their child’s cuisine, such as by making them eat certain foods and restricting their access to others, the fussier the child is likely to become at mealtimes, the study also found.
The rate in the Midwest was twice as high as in the Northeast and almost five times higher as in the Western United States.
“Parents should talk to their children’s doctors and work together to make sure that their children are up to date on their vaccines,” stressed Dr. Malini DeSilva, one of the report’s co-authors and a Minnesota pediatrician.
“The evidence shows that pupils are more alert, feel better, and pay better attention after self-paced physical activity when compared to just sitting,” said researcher Colin Moran.
Investigators looked at 138 studies involving more than 23 million children. Among their findings: MMR vaccines did not cause encephalitis, inflammatory bowel disease, cognitive delay or any other suspected harm.
The study found that young people are drinking less sugary beverages and consuming slightly more fruit and whole grains than they were in 1999.
“So many kids are at games just to get their treat afterwards, which really isn’t helping to develop healthy habits long term,” said researcher Lori Spruance. “The reward should be, ‘I got to have fun. I got to run around with my friend or score a goal.’”
“Teaching children to eat their greens is not something mothers should be doing alone,” says Kaisa Kahkonen, the study’s lead author.
Researchers found that the age at which girls begin to develop breasts has fallen by about three months per decade since the 1970s.
The greatest annual declines occurred after warning labels started appearing on children’s products.
New recommendations of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association are intended to reduce the growing incidence of sports-related physical injuries among young people.
An international team of researchers analyzed 58 studies involving more than 480,000 children and teens aged 4 to 18.
Rhode Island is cited as the healthiest state for women and children, followed by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut.
Example: All kids 5 and under should avoid drinking flavored milks, toddler formulas, plant-based/non-dairy milks, caffeinated beverages and sugar- and low-calorie sweetened beverages.
